概要：このトークでは、イギリスのファンタジー作家Diana Wynne Jonesが手がけた40冊以上の児童文学作品のうち、犬の体を持つ主人公の冒険を描いた小説 Dogsbody (1975)を中心に、Jonesの「動物ファンタジー」のあり方について考察する。はじめに、「動物ファンタジー」というジャンルの成り立ちや特徴に触れながら、Dogsbodyとあわせて動物を主人公にした短編 “What the Cat Told Me” (1993)と “Little Dot” (2003)の二篇を扱い、それぞれにおいてファンタジー特有の手法を用いて単なる擬人化にはとどまらない動物と人間の関係が描かれていることを論じる。さらに、Dogsbodyにおいて、独自の宇宙観やウェールズの神話を編み込むことによって提示される、新たな視点でとらえた地球の自然観や地球に根付く死生観について分析する。
In this talk, we will explore “animal fantasies” of the British fantasy writer Diana Wynne Jones, who left more than 40 books for children, with special attention to the novel Dogsbody (1975), which features a protagonist with a body of a dog. After a brief overview of the origin and characteristics of the genre known as “animal fantasy”, the paper will address the novel Dogsbody alongside two short stories featuring animals as protagonists: “What the Cat Told Me” (1993) and “Little Dot” (2003). Examining each work, I will discuss how they employ fantastic techniques to portray complex relationships between animals and humans, which go beyond mere anthropomorphism. Furthermore, this paper will analyse a fresh perspective on Earth’s nature and the cycle of life and death rooted in the Earth, presented in Dogsbody. This perspective is provided through the incorporation of unique cosmology and Welsh mythology.
