In this talk, Professor Watson will examine William Faulkner’s engagement with the discourse of the modern eugenics movement in order to explore issues of class, race, and heredity in several of William Faulkner’s most important and high modernist novels. In particular, Watson reminds us of Faulkner’s recurring interest in multi-generational genealogies, then compares and contrasts it with the “family study” method of American eugenics research in the early decades of the twentieth century.
